Teachable moments #37 - Why Leaders Must Believe It to See It: Even When Others Don’t

Let’s face it — most people need to see results before they believe something works. Whether it's a new product, a strategy, or a vision, they wait for proof before they commit.
But leaders? Real leaders operate differently.
Leaders have to believe first — before anything exists, before there's momentum, before anyone claps, supports, or even notices.
Because the truth is:
If you don’t believe it first, no one else will.
The difference between leaders and followers
Most people want certainty. They want data, case studies, success stories. They want something concrete before they take action. That’s fair — it’s human nature to be cautious.
But leaders don’t wait to be convinced. Leaders are the ones who convince.
They are the ones who stand in front of a team, a company, a classroom, or a movement and say, “I can see this happening, even if no one else does yet.”
That belief? It becomes the foundation.
It’s what inspires others to come on board — not because they’re certain, but because they trust you are.
Vision isn’t about eyesight — it’s about insight.
It’s easy to point at success once it’s achieved.
But the real challenge is pointing toward it before it's even there — and saying with confidence, “Let’s go.”
As a leader, there will always be people waiting on the sidelines.
They’ll say:
“Let’s wait and see what happens.”
“No one has done this before.”
“What if it fails?”
And your job isn’t to fight them.
Your job is to stay rooted in belief. To keep moving forward, even if it's slow. Even if it's lonely. Because someone has to go first — and that’s what leadership really is.
Belief creates momentum
When people see that you’re not easily shaken — that you truly believe in the vision — something shifts. People might not immediately agree with you, but they’ll start to lean in. They’ll start to watch more closely. And slowly, some will join you.
It always starts with one person willing to say,
“I believe in what we’re building. Even if it hasn’t happened yet.”
That’s when the tide turns.
So how do you lead with belief?
Be clear on your vision. If you can’t describe it simply, others won’t follow.
Act with conviction. Even small, consistent steps show people you’re serious.
Embrace uncertainty. It’s part of the process. Belief doesn’t eliminate fear — it helps you walk through it.
Hold space for others. Some will take longer to believe — that’s okay. Your belief gives them time and confidence to catch up.
In summary:
Most people need to see it to believe it.
But leaders?
They believe it to see it.
If you're leading something right now — a team, a project, a vision for the future — and you feel like you're the only one who believes in it, don't give up.
That belief is not weakness. It's not naïve.
It's the spark that will light the way for others.
And when the results finally show?
People will say, “I always knew this would work.”
But you’ll know —
You believed it before anyone else did.
And that made all the difference.
