Teachable moments #49 - The only thing that is truly ours to give, is our time.

Many people give gifts, furnish finances, provide promises, and offer opportunities. Yet the most precious currency we possess is time.
I reflected on this last week when I had to choose between a high-potential meeting and attending to a dear friend who needed help. The meeting could open up good financial opportunities. The catch-up? Just 90 minutes of my life.
I chose the catch up.
Here's what I've internalised: Time cannot be:
- Earned back once spent
- Manufactured when depleted
- Borrowed when you run out
When you give someone your time, you're giving a portion of your life that you'll never recover. That's the ultimate gift.
We often say we don't have enough time, but the truth is we all have exactly the same amount - it's how we allocate it that differs.
Think about it:
- When was the last time you truly gave someone your undivided attention?
- How many "quick checks" of your phone interrupted that conversation?
- Did that urgent email actually need an immediate response?
The people who have impacted me most weren't those who gave me things - they were those who gave me their undistracted presence.
I'm challenging myself to be more intentional with my time. Not just productive, but present. Not just efficient, but engaged.
The next time someone asks for your help, advice, or just a coffee meeting - remember what you're really being asked to give them.
Your time might be the most valuable gift they receive today.
